Eric Garay began his adventures in gaming on a humble 8-bit system. A pad of graph paper for hand-drawing dungeon maps sat beside his green-screen monitor, and a 1200 baud modem dialed into a BBS like the one he would run himself as a teenager. Despite the technical limitations of those times, the industry he fell in love with was built on ingenuity and imagination — and the virtual worlds they created were completely alive with possibility.
His journey carried him through the lands of Britannia, the dungeons beneath Tristram, and eventually the best shops on the Citadel — forty years of an industry growing from basement curiosity into one of the largest entertainment businesses on earth.
After starting his career in financial consulting, Eric resumed his gaming journey professionally. Over twenty-plus years of senior financial leadership in the industry followed — from early studio roles to CFO positions working alongside some of the most recognized names and franchises in gaming. He learned how these companies actually work: the revenue models, what it costs to take a game from greenlight to launch, and the distance between a great game and a financially successful one.
2023 marked the next stage of Eric's journey. What began as a search for the next opportunity became something more deliberate: game companies of every size need CFO-grade financial expertise, but rarely need a full-time CFO hire. Eric recognized this gap and built Garay Games Financial to fill it.
Garay Games Financial has since grown into a complete finance team — providing CFO strategy, accounting, and FP&A services — the kind of full-stack finance function Eric spent two decades building inside the industry's largest companies, now deployed simultaneously across a portfolio of clients.
Forty years after the first dungeon map, the graph paper is retired. The journey remains.
